Local Spotlight: Decatur’s Princess Theatre

Decatur's Princess Theatre

The arts allow us a getaway from our everyday obligations. As we immerse ourselves in new stories, shows, and songs, we can find respite from our stresses. Decatur’s Princess Theatre is known for helping audiences step into a new world. Right now, they’re still holding events—in a socially-distanced capacity, of course. If you want to enjoy a great performance or film, we’re here to shine a light on the theatre and how it’s operating currently.

What is Decatur’s Princess Theatre?

Whether you like to perform, see shows, or both, you may have heard of Decatur’s Princess Theatre. This landmark has brought entertainment to town since 1983. That’s 37 years of plays, concerts, musicals, and more.

As a non-profit organization, the theatre’s main purpose is to feed the arts scene in Decatur, Alabama. It also hopes to educate visitors too, so that they can see the importance of performing—and how it can positively impact the community.

How is the Princess Theatre working at the moment?

As we all know by now, the world is adjusting to the spread of COVID-19. The Princess Theatre takes that reality seriously, which is why they are operating in a socially-distanced, safe capacity. Though they aren’t currently holding ensemble cast shows, they are screening films and plan to have smaller-scale performances. They’ve shown both classic and recent movies like:

  • Pirates of the Caribbean;
  • Splash;
  • Creature from the Black Lagoon;
  • Finding Nemo;
  • The Goonies;
  • The Bride of Frankenstein;
  • And more.
